She's Here

I always think Benji tells our children's birth stories better than I do. The details get fuzzy for me, I am sure it is just natures way of having you remember the good parts and forgetting about the harder moments. If I remembered everything crystal clear, I am sure Ella would be an only child. So I am going to start the story of and have Benji finish it. All I know is when it was all over I was very at peace with this being the very last time I every had to go through natural childbirth and that our family was now complete.

I woke up at 4a.m. as my water broke and waited for some contractions to start.  I remembered with Ella my water broke and it was two hours later before the contractions started.  Well, at 6:20 we were getting the kids ready for school and still NO contractions.  So we got the kid's stuff ready to spend the night at Grandma and Grandpa's house and gathered a few things for the hospital and headed to St. Als. This was only after Aunt Ashley and our neighbor Jill (Both ER nurses) begged us to go in as they know horror stories.

I guess it is my turn to tell the story......

So the night before I said to Michelle, it would be awesome if you waited so I can go and teach tomorrow as I have to be at school tomorrow. It is really important for me to be there......I did knock on wood.....guess it didn't help.

I knew when the lights came on at 4 AM it was time. I tend to get very anxious right off and then calm down and start to think through what we need to do. I of course had yet to pack but it is not hard for me. We got the kids to school and came home and watched TV and really enjoyed our morning as we knew the day was going to get crazy. Michelle was not having any contractions but the nurses in our lives stressed that we go in, so we did. After getting checked in and making sure everything was good, I went and got us lunch. With Ella, I never ate and was starving when she finally came, Cooper nothing was open as it was Easter and we did try to get a Sandwich from Heavenly Ham but they would only sell us a ham and not a sandwich. Today they were serving sandwiches. I went quickly (though she was still not having contractions) to get us lunch and came back and we enjoyed our lunch in our room and watched some more TV. Eventually we started to walk. Wow did we walk. I got so bored of the walk (I know poor me) that I made her walk it in reverse so that I could see new things. We walked all afternoon. I still wish I had had my fitbit on so that I could know how many miles. Contractions would start, we would go back to the room and the nurses would motor the contractions, and then the contraction would stop/slow.

By the way our Mid-wife was out of town....AGAIN!!! This was the third time and I had told her throughout that if she was not there we would not name our child after her (Margie.....sorry but it was never in the running). She was up in Northern Idaho fishing. So we had a different Midwife working with us all day and we loved her! Little did we know that Michelle would take all day and not really go into active labor which allowed Margie to get home and come in to deliver our baby.

Margie arrived and was worried that it had been a long time since Michelle's water broke and not having contractions. She recommended that Michelle receive some Pitocin to help things move along. It didn't take long as they started the Pitocin around 8 and Michelle started pushing at 9:29 and Addison came out at 9:38. That 1.5 hours was crazy. Addison decided to make things a bit hard by having her shoulder get caught on the way out (Shoulder dystocia). Her head came out as normal and then she would come no matter how hard Michelle pushed and Margie pulled. Yes she literally was pulling on her head. Michelle looked up at me and yelled "That hurts, that hurts" and that was the only thing she has EVER said during labor of all three, so I knew something was different. I watched and witnessed all of the crazy. I have since looked up the different techniques used to get the baby out in this situation and when I read the words "cork screw" method I said, "THATS THE ONE!" So after about 20 seconds of Midwife and Nurses getting a bit of a sense of urgency everyone was happy and good.

We didn't know if it was a boy or a girl and I looked and for a second thought it was a boy (umbilical cord) but of course she was a girl, as I have been stating since the 2nd month. I never wavered as I could just tell. Poor Coop was for sure it was a boy and of course Ella told him "it is ok Cooper, when we have our next one Mom and Dad can have a boy". Sorry to ruin that part but this is it! Our Family is complete and we are very happy and content with what we have. These three kids and my wife are the best things that have every happened to me and I can't wait for all the years we have ahead of us!
